So many of you know that Red and I approach things differently. Our experiences at Frog Mountain were no exception. I went first and was hoping to take Red there, but we didn't manage to pull that off, so he went with some guys and had a much more extreme version of checking out Frog Mountain.
My Trip to Frog Mountain
My trip was with a group from Olympia. We took a car from Olympia around 8AM and drove to Frog Mountain. From the parking area, it is a short hike, river crossing and steep uphill climb for 10-15 minutes and then we reached the top for a fantastic view. There is a legend that the mountain is a sacred place with lots of energy and that it was previously used by natives for religious purposes. I don't know about the energy part, but from the top you do get a beautiful views of creation that seem to go on forever.

Red's Trip to Frog Mountain
Red, Matt, Alexey and another friend decided taking cars to Frog Mountain was too convenient and for wimps and that riding bicycles there would be much more manly. So they set off after work on Friday (while I was in Sapporo) for a 1.5-2 hour bike ride all up hill with huge backpacks on because they also decided to camp there so they could catch a sunrise at Frog Mountain. I don't think any of them slept well because they took turns watching for bears and sounding a bear horn. Around 5am they gave up on trying to sleep and climbed up sunrise to check out the view. Then they rode their bikes back home (only took around 30 minutes because it was almost all downhill) and went fishing because one adventure wasn't enough. They didn't catch any salmon, but saw hundreds of them and even got run into by some of them in the river...they just weren't biting. After all of that, Red and Matt came to the airport to pick us up from the Sapporo trip and we got some shashlik for dinner up at the community center. What a day! Red says this was a perfect weekend for him: biking, hiking, fishing, camping, fire-making and good conversation :).
